This two-year programme includes regular visits to Rycotewood Furniture Oxford – a leading furniture education provider. You will have access to fully-equipped apprentice training workshops with highly experienced and dedicated staff. Our workshops are equipped with the latest industry standards.

In addition to the practical element, you will study industry-linked theory based subjects, some of which will culminate in final exams.

Through the programme, you will also:

  • Work on building a portfolio of work-based evidence.
  • Complete a series of self-study tasks which will link to two online assessments – on the Industry and Health and Safety.
  • Be prepared for a two hours assessment at the end of the programme.
  • Work towards English and maths functional skills at Level 2, if not already achieved.

You will visit Rycotewood Furniture Oxford, based at City of Oxford College, for a programme of one-week intensive training blocks.

During these visits, you will engage in carefully planned skills development projects, covering a range of modern and traditional furniture manufacturing techniques. You will also prepare for the End Point Assessment.

Skill development activities will cover –

  • measuring and marking out
  • machinery tools and equipment
  • component production
  • jigs and templates
  • assembly and fittings

You will produce practice exercises and small items of furniture as part of this process.

The end point assessment tests will take place during the final college visit. In addition to the portfolio assessment and knowledge tests, there will be a two-hour observation assessment of practical activity which will happen in their workplace.

The awarding body for our Furniture Manufacturer Apprenticeship is ‘Occupational Awards Limited’. OAL will be responsible for carrying out the ‘End Point Assessment’.

A furniture apprenticeship can lead to a rewarding career in a variety of roles in the furniture industry. You may choose to progress with your employer, change jobs or study a higher-level apprenticeship.

If you do not already possess a GCSE grade C / 4 in English and maths, you will be required to work towards a level 2 functional skills exam. Those with a GCSE grade E / 3 will need to achieve a Level 1 functional skills exam in order to achieve the apprenticeship standard.
