The broad purpose of the occupation is to produce and assemble bespoke pieces of furniture to meet individual customers’ requirements. This can cover pieces such as tables, chairs, cabinets, office furniture, kitchens and bedrooms.  Bespoke Furniture Makers work with and need to understand a variety of materials – including wood, metals, glass, plastics, fabric, finishes and other relevant materials.

The programme is designed to give a wide range of skills appropriate to the different occupations in the industry. This apprenticeship covers the following occupational areas:

  • General Furniture Manufacturer
  • Bed Manufacturer
  • Modern Upholsterer
  • Furniture Finisher
  • Fitted Furniture Installer
  • Furniture Restorer
  • Modern Furniture Service Repairer
  • Foam Convertor and Upholstery Cushion Interior Manufacturer
  • Wood Machinist
  • Furniture CNC Specialist

You are assigned your own workbench from the beginning to help you find your feet. Working side-by-side with your peers, this apprenticeships are highly practical.

Working in partnership with the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre at City of Oxford College – offers you the opportunity to develop skills in a host of areas, including the use of hand tools, woodwork machinery, assembly and finishing, Design – CAD/sketching and an awareness of commercial practice.

You must achieve level 2 English and maths prior to taking your endpoint assessment.

A furniture apprenticeship can lead to a rewarding career in a variety of roles in the furniture industry. You may choose to progress with your employer, change jobs or study a higher-level apprenticeship.
