The overall aim of this programme is to introduce you to a range of skills and topics that are imperative in the sporting industry. Implementing a broad and balanced curriculum allows us to build on your existing skills, knowledge and understanding by tapping into your passion and enthusiasm for this area. This will allow you to delve deeper and discover the science behind sport and exercise, and how sports performance and fitness can be affected.

You will develop excellent practical skills in exercise, leisure activities and fitness testing. You will also become an approved emergency first aider.

 

You will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas: 

Anatomy and Physiology for Sport – This includes the structure and functions of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Effects of Exercise on the Body Systems – Understanding of the short and long-term effects of exercise on the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems. In addition, you will investigate various physical activities that use the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, as well as the impact of drugs on sports performance.

Psychology for Sports Performance – Exploring the psychological demands of a selected sport. This will include the impact of psychological factors on performance and strategies to enhance performance.

Planning and Leading Sport Activities – Successful planning and leading of sports activity sessions and events. You will learn how to review your own performance, identify your strengths, and pinpoint areas for improvement.

Business Skills in Sport – Developing the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support an effective sport and leisure business operation.

Nutrition for Sports Performance – Exploring the nutritional requirements needed for specific sports to maximise and enhance performance.

Fitness Testing and Training – Developing your knowledge of fitness requirements and training methods for achieving excellence in sports performance. This unit also explores the effects of lifestyle and psychological factors on sports training and performance.

On this Level 2 course, you will be given the opportunity to gain professional recognition by completing the CIMSPA Recreation Assistant professional status accreditation. Having a professional status shows the world that you are a trained and highly skilled recreation assistant. You can gain professional recognition for your knowledge, skills and experience by sharing your status with employers, clients and your peers. 
 
CIMSPA accreditation includes:

  • Safe equipment and activity areas
  • The recreation assistant role within the organisation

 

This course involves a mixture of theoretical and practical work.

Assessment is through a mixture of practical assessments, portfolio evidence, and short-answer examinations.

You need to have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above or achievement on a Level 1 Foundation Pathway, including Functional Skills maths and English at Level 1.
