What you’ll learn:
The overall aim of this program is to introduce the learners to a range of skills and topics that are imperative in the sporting industry. Implementing a broad and balanced curriculum allows us to build on the students existing skills, knowledge and understanding by tapping into their passion and enthusiasm for this area allowing them to delve into more depth of the science behind sport and exercise and how sports performance and fitness can be impacted.
The units covered are:
- Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology for sport. This includes the structure and functions of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- Effects of Exercise on the Body Systems
The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the short and long-term effects of exercise on the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems. In addition, you will investigate different physical activities that use the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and the impact of drugs on sports performance.
- Psychology for Sports Performance
The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills required for the psychological demands of a selected sport. This will include the impact that psychological factors play on performance and strategies that can be used to enhance performance.
- Planning and Leading Sport Activities
The aim of this unit is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for successful planning and leading of sports activity sessions and events. You will learn how to review your own performance, identifying your strengths and areas for improvement.
- Business Skills in Sport
The aim of this unit is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support an effective sport and leisure business operation.
- Nutrition for Sports Performance
The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the nutritional requirements needed for specific sports to maximise and enhance performance.
- Fitness Testing and Training
The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge of fitness requirements and training methods for achieving excellence in sports performance. This unit also explores the effects of lifestyle and psychological factors on sports training and performance.

The course involves a mixture of theoretical and practically based work.
Assessment is through a mixture of practical assessments, portfolio evidence and short answer examinations.

Entry requirements
You need to have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above or achievement on a Level 1 Foundation Pathway, including Functional Skills maths and English at Level 1.
