#Coronachronicles was the collaborative outcome between Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma students and Creative Industries staff at City of Oxford College.
In May 2020, the Ashmolean museum launched their 2020 Artists in Residence competition in collaboration with the Oxford Times.
The competition asked people nationwide to submit artwork inviting them to demonstrate artistic creativity in response to coronavirus and lockdown.
The competition received almost 1,200 entries, from across the UK including paintings, drawings and photographs, collage, sculpture, video, mosaics and textiles.
#Coronachronicles was the collaborative outcome between Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma students and Creative Industries staff at City of Oxford College.
Throughout lockdown, students accessed their lessons remotely online. One of these lessons was inspired by artist Max Siedentopf and his project, ‘How to survive a deadly global virus’.
Each student was asked to create their own mask constructed from household items to then model and then photograph. These images were collated into one final piece, #coronachronicles.
Kayleigh Carter, Art and Design Tutor at City of Oxford College, said: The class of 2020 have missed out on their end of year fashion show, exhibition and leaving do, so we created this to commemorate this very abrupt ending to their learning with us.”
This final piece was submitted to the Artists in Residence competition at the Ashmolean. It has since been shortlisted in the 18+ category and featured on the Ashmolean website and in print in the Oxford Times.
