Sophie Probert originally came to Bracknell and Wokingham College to study Beauty Therapy. After finishing studying beauty therapy, she decided to study hairdressing at the college.
While she was studying beauty therapy, Sophie did some work experience at a beauty salon in Crowthorne, after which she managed to secure a part-time job. Sophie has combined this job with a hairdressing programme at Bracknell and Wokingham College and a second part-time job on high street beauty counter.
“The tutors are really supportive and try to help you as much as they can to get all the skills you need pass all of your exams. And the facilities are great. For the Hair side you’ve got all the hairdryers, straighteners, everything and then we get clients in so you’re actually practically doing the learning, actually doing it rather than sitting in a classroom being told how to do it and the same with beauty like they’ve got all the products, the routines and everything for us to go through and learn and then also get clients in to practise it.
“You’re actually doing it and physically learning how to do it rather than shown a video clip about it. The tutors show you exactly how to do it on people or a mannequin, so you can actually put it into practice.
Sophie also did some work experience at a hair salon while studying hairdressing, “my work experience helped me to see an insight of how it all ran and what salon life was like and how busy it was.”
Sophie has enjoyed her time at college, “I’ve become a lot more independent. My skills have progressed a lot. I’ve made a lot of new friends.”
And her advice for others who are thinking about coming to Bracknell and Wokingham College is: “I’d recommend it if they were interested in hair and beauty or any of the courses, but you’ve got to be interested in it and not just doing it for the sake of it.”
Sophie currently has a part-time job at Body Image Beauty Salon in Crowthorne, where she would like to continue working in once she has finished studying. She would like to progress in her skills in beauty therapy and perhaps set-up her own business in the future.
